The Avonside Motel in Falmouth opened a lunch room in 1972. - FileWINDSOR, N.S. — Here's a look at what was making the news 15 and 50 years ago in the Hants Journal.• The community was in mourning after four people died during what was described as a horrific three-vehicle crash in Gypsum Mines. A senior couple from Centre Burlington and two young men, one of Centre Burlington, the other from Windsor, died. Two women travelling in a third vehicle sustained minor injuries.

In 2007, Windsor RBC operational support officer Carol Dee and branch manager Jennifer Fisher were busy collecting winter clothing for the bank’s annual Coats for Kids campaign. - File • Several people were being sought as extras to appear in a made-for-TV-movie being filmed in Windsor. Portions of the Memory Keeper’s Daughter, starring Dermot Mulroney, Gretchen Mole and Emily Watson, was being filmed downtown over nine days. The film was set in for Lexington, Ky.• Complaints were made after a stray dog, one day after giving birth, was shot at, badly wounded and left for dead by Town of Windsor employees. A resident reported the injured dog wandered for hours, suffering.

• A reception was held for Miss Nova Scotia Alanna Payne on her return from the Miss Canada Pageant. More than 100 people attended the celebration. Premier Gerald Regan, who lived next door to Payne when she was a child, also attended and said she was very deserving of being crowned Miss Congeniality at the national event.

• The community of Walton was mourning the death of Sam, Timmie Parr’s pet crow. Someone shot the well-known bird. Sam would follow Parr to school and play with children in the multi-purpose room, he would go sledding with Parr in the wintertime — flying down the hill but catching a ride on the sled heading back up the hill, and even travelled on the car’s windshield wipers when the family went for a drive.

• On sale at Dominion was two-pounds of Schwartz peanut butter for 77 cents, a 60-pack of Morse’s orange pekoe tea for 79 cents, and a 14-ounce box of Pot of Gold chocolates for $1.59.
