AFL: Robbo and Gerard discuss on AFL 360 the new schedule for the rest of the season, and their disappointment with the re-shuffle regarding Thursday games.
The AFL’s latest fixture release has come under scrutiny for removing Thursday night games including a call it “hands the NRL a huge free kick.”, which won’t feature any Thursday night matches despite it being widely seen as a success and regular feature in every other round.“it’s important to find a balance” with Thursday night fixturing, but expects more in the new broadcast deal from 2025.
“Heading into the new broadcast deal next year, we really want to build on the success of them this year and would expect to try and incorporate a few more depending on how they’re going.”Speaking on the program, Whateley was stunned by the “terrible” decision to remove Thursday night games, arguing too much onus is put on them being blockbuster matchups.
“It hands the NRL a huge free kick where they just fixture every Thursday night. And at a time we’re being told: ‘Our challenge is Netflix, it’s not other sports’.“We’ve solved it and gone straight back to it. I cannot fathom for the life of me why they would do this ... never mind working, just as a footy fan, it’s just disappointing that’s how it’s landed.”Chief Herald Sun reporter Robinson concurred with his co-host, calling it a “serious” matter the footy world wouldn’t agree with.
