Several Hamilton area businesses and organizations are raising funds to help the people of Turkey and Syria after the earthquake.
The damage from the earthquake that hit the Turkish-Syrian border stretched as far as the Hatay province in southern Turkey, close to where Hamilton resident Ramazan Alan's mother and brother live.
"It's being human you know, it doesn't matter the country, doesn't matter their religion — it's just being human to try to help people," he said. "Today it's Turkey, tomorrow it's Syria, next it can be Iran or Greece, it doesn't matter." Association President Javid Mirza said since last week the community was also able to collect and donate more than 20 vans full of clothing. The items were sent overseas on Saturday. He described the support of the local community was "tremendous."
Saeed said that with temperatures in Turkey and Syria reaching low single digits, receiving funds would be a more efficient way to help keep people warm and fed.
