The Halifax native announced his retirement from coaching on Monday at the age of 69. Bowness just finished his second season as the head coach of the Winnipeg Jets. It was his 38th year on an NHL bench.
Bowness's first coaching job in the NHL was with the Jets in 1984-87. He was also a head coach with the Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins, Arizona Coyotes, New York Islanders and Dallas Stars and was an assistant or associate coach with the Vancouver Canucks and Tampa Bay Lightning.Bowness was just named a finalist for the Jack Adams award for coach of the year in the NHL. Vancouver's Rick Tocchet and Nashville's Andrew Brunette were the other nomineees.
The Jets set team records for road wins and longest winning streak during the 2023-24 campaign. Their 52 wins tied the previous franchise mark set in 2017-18.Bowness's wife Judy experienced a serious health scare back in October that took him away from the team for several weeks. She made a positive recovery from the seizure over the next month, paving the way for Bowness to return to the Winnipeg bench in late November.
