Sultan Al Jaber, the CEO of the U.A.E.’s state-owned oil and renewable energy companies, has been a controversial pick for president of the COP28 global climate conference. Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault wrapped up two days of meetings in Brussels, Belgium, on Friday, the results of which shed some light on what the focus will be at the upcoming COP28 global climate conference., Guilbeault said he hoped his time in Belgium would “set up ambitious expectations for COP28, and secure new commitments with real and tangible global impact.”
Among the commitments he mentioned included peaking global emissions by 2025, accelerating the phase-out of unabated fossil fuels, and phasing out the use of coal.
