STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOSQuebec City – Fresh from a visit to Beijing, Liberal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault appeared at the doorstep of Quebec City’s convention centre on Friday to crash the Conservative party’s national convention and call leader Pierre Poilievre a climate denier.
“It’s somewhat ironic that someone who would drape themselves into freedom and give doughnuts to the people who are occupying the streets of Ottawa would deny us the freedom… their convention. What is it they have to hide?” “Let’s hope that Quebecers won’t be fooled by his messaging,” said Naélie Bouchard-Sylvain, spokeswoman for a local community group who was part of the protesters.
Since he arrived in Quebec City, Poilievre has been sharpening his partisan attacks in French, especially on the Bloc, which he accuses of siding with the Liberals in wanting to increase the cost of gas. Poilievre was referring to the Liberal government’s new Clean Fuel Regulations, in place since July, which the Parliamentary Budget Officer estimated will raise gas prices an extra 17 cents per litre by 2030. Quebecers aren’t subject to the separate federal carbon tax because the province has its own cap-and-trade system.
Conservative Quebec MP Bernard Généreux said he is convinced many Quebecers who were used to “parking” their votes to the Bloc will cozy up to the Tories with the new messaging.
