'I laid down black earth this spring to fix the grade of my house and tons of weeds popped up. How would you suggest I contend with the weed invasion?' | SaltWire
Katelyn Slater adds handfuls of earth to the base of a newly-planted spruce tree.I laid down black earth this spring to fix the grade of my house and tons of weeds popped up. I’ve weeded these beds twice already this season and they’ve filled back up and now the earth is as hard as concrete. I even tried soaking the beds but that didn’t soften up the soil enough to let me pull the weeds.
Once you’ve decided on the soil to use, the next step is dealing with the weeds. The reader wondered if laying cardboard over top the weeds and covering that with topsoil would work. That would have been my suggestion. The cardboard should choke out the weeds over time and then slowly break down into the existing soil. Good quality topsoil laid down over the cardboard will make an excellent foundation for the bed.I bought two small blue spruce on discount. They are about 60 cm tall.
This is actually the best time to plant the spruce. The cooler temperatures are much better for transplants. Dig your planting hole twice as big as the rootball. Add some compost or well-rotted manure to the hole. Work the organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the planting hole. After you fill in the planting hole tamp the soil in well. Form a dam around the edge of the planting with the soil to help trap water.
Water in well and then I like to turn the hose to just a trickle and then insert the hose into the newly tamped soil and move it up and down to remove any trapped air pockets. This is an old landscaper’s trick. A trapped air pocket can actually kill off a newly planted tree. The next key then is to water every day after planting for a good week and then every few days until freeze up.I hope you don’t mind an indoor plant question.
