The Greens are planning another motion that will test Labor’s unity over the war in Gaza after Labor senator Fatima Payman’s decision to vote to recognise Palestinian statehood.
The Greens are expected to test Albanese government MPs’ loyalty to the Labor Party line with another motion supporting Palestine.
Labor senator Fatima Payman crossed the floor to vote with the Greens to recognise Palestinian statehood.Typically, Labor MPs are thrown out of the party for voting against a collective party position in parliament but Payman looks set to avoid that outcome, with a spokesperson for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese saying that “previous caucus members have crossed the floor without facing expulsion”.
“A precedent has been set with senator Payman being allowed to cross the floor,” said a Greens source speaking on background to discuss party strategy. If further MPs were to cross the floor, it would represent a fracturing of unity within Labor over the war in Gaza and a challenge to the prime minister’s authority.
Speaking after she crossed the floor, Payman said her decision to cross the floor was the “most difficult decision I have had to make”.
