Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather has accused Labor of making personal attacks to distract from its housing policy, which he claims would just make the situation worse in Australia.
The Housing Australia Future Fund , which aims to build 30,000 social and affordable dwellings in its first five years,Labor’s signature reform aims to plunge $10 billion into a fund and partner with outside financing to then reinvest all returns into social and affordable housing. The Greens are demanding more concessions from Labor, largely around renters’ rights, which has led to fiery debate between the government and the minor party.
“What’s disappointing is a lot of this has gotten quite personal and devolved into these personal attacks,” he told Sky News Australia. “They want to get $10 billion, gamble it on the stock market, and then spend some of the returns on housing when we know at the end of their five year plan we will see more people waiting for social and affordable housing, more renters in rental stress, more people living on the streets.”
The Coalition has ruled out supporting the bill at all, arguing the government had not adequately considered how booming migration over the next five years would put extra strain on housing supply.

They are panicking,” he said. “Burney had an opportunity to bring Australians together and instead with this inflammatory rhetoric, she divided us once again into tribal, political camps.”
