A review of the MMFF winning film 'Green Bones', praising its effective storytelling, exploration of complex themes, and strong performances.

There are 10 movies in this year's MMFF . Some movie enthusiasts were able to see and support all of them. Due to a schedule that kept me homebound, I was able to catch one, ' Green Bones .' I chose it because it had good buzz and a 96-minute run time. ' Green Bones ' is a great exercise in tight, effective storytelling. It knew exactly where it was going and how to get there. Every scene and image meant something important.

I'm no fan of long run times and I feel some directors should really learn to kill their darlings, so to speak. Good ideas or stories should not be dragged out. 'Green Bones' ruminates on the nature of evil, criminality and redemption. Evil may not necessarily be wearing a PDL (person deprived of liberty) uniform, we all know, it could be wearing something suggesting authority. The film tells the story of Domingo Zamora (Dennis Trillo), Dom Saltik, sent to the fictional island penal colony of San Fabian. Newly assigned prison guard, Xavier Gonzaga (Ruru Madrid), is skeptical of any notion for an early release for Dom. He is suspicious of Dom's every action. He and his circle of inmates must surely be up to no good. The first part of this well-crafted yarn tells the tale from Gonzaga's point of view and why he's laser-focused on Dom. Then it tells the story from Dom's side. It also brings in the stories of a few of the inmates — who aren't presented as evil, just people on the lowest rungs, unfortunates put on the spot, without connections or the deep pockets to pay lawyers or buy off cops. The cast works well to tell the story and once again, it's always a joy to see Ronnie Lazaro on screen. He may not always have the lead role but he sure makes the characters he plays so memorable. Ricky Lee and Angeli Atienza write a taut screenplay based on a story by JC Rubio. Zig Dulay, who helmed 'Firefly' — last year's film fest best picture, also directs this one. 'Green Bones' won the best picture award, as well as the award for best screenplay, best cinematography, best actor, best supporting actor and best child performer. MMFF movies will continue to be screened until January 14
