A great horned owl looks sternly out from the grill of a truck after it was hit on Highway 101 earlier this month. The bird survived without any injuries. - Hope For WildlifeHope Swinimer says she has no idea how a great horned owl survived crashing into the grill of a truck on Highway 101 near Mount Uniacke, where the speed limit is 110 km/h., took the call about the collision, they expected some significant injuries.
“We did all the medical work, the X-rays, we searched and searched and could find nothing wrong,” Swinimer said. Normally in cases where there are no injuries, staff at the rehabilitation centre would release a bird back to the wild right away, “but we did decide, because it looked from the photos and everything we saw that there should have been injuries, to keep him for three days and then got him back out,” Swinimer said.
Swinimer said it appeared the birds were locked in aerial combat and fell to Earth, with one landing on the bottom and suffering a broken wing. The one that won the battle, so to speak, was released back where it was found. The other had pins and other hardware put in place to mend the wing. The pins have just been removed and the bird will spend the next few weeks on cage rest, but “is recovering really well," Swinimer said.
