Roger Lukis, 81, was on his daily walk at Kings Beach when he spotted a commotion in the surf and leapt into action to pull an unconscious woman to safety.

"I'm so proud of him and in awe of the fact that he just went in and did it, didn't think twice," she said.

She said he had been suffering from some health issues and underwent medical checks and an electrocardiogram the day before. "He was wearing a heart monitor for 24 hours the day before and he'd literally taken that off a few hours before the rescue," Sami Lukis said. "I said to him, 'Just keep an eye on your body because physically that's a pretty big ordeal for an 81-year-old man.'""He's just downplaying the whole thing and saying it's not a big deal," she said.Sunshine Coast beaches have been hit with rough surf and dangerous conditions this summer.Lifeguard supervisor Rhys Drury said the woman had gone under a wave and remained face down in the water.

"Especially over these last Christmas holidays, we've had a lot of swell and a lot of dangerous conditions," he said."Our message is plain and simple: If you are heading down to the beach, just make sure you swim between those red and yellow flags," Mr Drury said."One of the great things about our job is that we get to save people's lives, and when you manage to pull off a rescue or revive someone, it's hugely rewarding," Mr Drury said.
