THUNDER BAY — Grainhandlers working for three companies in the city have voted strongly in favour of a contract offer, preventing a work stoppage.
About 180 workers employed by elevator operators Richardson, Viterra and Superior Elevator approved the offer in a vote on Friday, with sources indicating that more than 80 per cent voted in favour. The United Steelworkers had issued a strike notice last week, with a labour disruption set for last weekend, but that notice was rescinded after the two sides agreed to mediation.
The strike notice had been reinstated, and a walkout was set to take place Saturday if the offer wasn't approved.
