Another statistic from the report: sixty-one per cent of the U.K.’s 18-to-34s agree that “having a strong leader who does not have to bother with parliament and elections would be a good way of governing this country.” Well above half think that doing away with parliament and elections would be a good idea. Further, more than 25 per cent of 18-to-34s in the U.K. believe that “democracy is a bad way of governing the country” —a rate three times higher than among those over 55.
So, what is causing young people in the West to disengage from democracy and embrace authoritarian forms of government that have failed miserably in the past ?
