NT Acting Chief Minister Nicole Manison was asked at a press conference if her government had backed a “unicorn” that was never going to be able to realise its goals.
The Government has long been spruiking the benefits of Sun Cable’s Australia-Asia Powerlink project, which plans to send power from a huge solar farm near Tennant Creek to Singapore via a 4,200km sub-sea cable from Darwin.
In August 2020, Ian Kew, the head of the Darwin Major Business Group suggest the project was “fanciful”. “I think we need to take a deep breath here and realise that this is a $30 billion project, it is going to be globally significant and we make no apologies for backing in and working alongside a project like this that looks to deliver power – renewable, clean, green power - from outside of Tennant Creek up to our friends in Singapore and that will help attract more investment here in the Northern Territory,” she said.“I remain very upbeat and excited about Sun Cable’s future,” he said.
