There was a desire in the Government to select a candidate quickly, ahead of a European Council summit on Thursday and Friday. The meeting comes ahead of a key gathering of EU leaders in Brussels later this week, where they are expected to nominate candidates who will take on Europe’s top jobs, including the president of the European Commission.
Foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg will have one eye on the summit in Brussels, but also on ongoing conflicts that have dominated the EU’s foreign policy agenda.
