The Hill Times
Back in May, I joined a group of health and environmental groups in signing an open letter to the British Columbia government asking that a stale-dated recommendation of that province's Health Officers Council finally be acted upon. Back in 2018, it had asked for an independent, cumulative health impacts assessment for the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion , as the initial review before the National Energy Board —now the Canadian Energy Regulator—had been wholly inadequate.
There has been no evaluation of these health risks, nor has there been a thorough environmental risk assessment. Meanwhile, it is hard to imagine how, in an urgent health and environmental disaster, the different and uncoordinated regulators and responders could respond. The government at many levels is unprepared for the threat. Transport Canada, the Coast Guard, West Coast Marine Response Corporation, the B.C. Ministry of Environment, CC Strat, B.C.
