Sweeping laws criminalising Nazi symbolism will be introduced by the federal government in a bid to curb far-right extremism.

Anyone found selling items carrying insignia related to Nazism or the Schutzstaffel could face fines of up to $16,500 or a year in prison.

Picture: NCA NewsWire / Gary Ramage Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said the bill will also cover the display and selling of Nazi memorabilia. “And we will no longer allow people to profit from the display and sale of items which celebrate the Nazis and their evil ideology,” he said.

“The ban includes, but is not limited to, the trade and public display of flags, armbands, t-shirts, insignia and the publication of symbols online promoting Nazi ideology.”Displaying the Swastika for religious, academic, journalistic, or artistic purposes will not be outlawed under the legislation.Next week, we will introduce a bill to the Federal Parliament to outlaw the display of and profiteering from Nazi hate.
