At least 540 miners did not return to the surface after their shift on Sunday, with the National Union of Mineworkers arguing that these workers are held against their will by the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union.
JOHANNESBURG - Mining company Gold One Group Limited CEO Jonathan Hericourt insists that the 500 workers underground at its Modder east mine in Springs are held hostage.
At least 540 miners did not return to the surface after their shift on Sunday, with the National Union of Mineworkers arguing that these workers are held against their will by the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union. Hericourt said the workers have access to water and medication with two paramedics treating some for minor injuries.In what has been described as a hostage situation at the mine, workers said that they're being prevented from leaving the mine.Num claims its members have been assaulted at springs mineHericourt said they have reached a deadlock in the discussion to release the hostages.
"We need to go sort out a way where they can go underground, and go and get their members to release the hostages. However, they insisted the condition for them to do that, is that they be recognised as the only representative union on the mine," said Hericourt.
