To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, we've assembled a list of 100 women who've made a substantial impact on our country or our lives over the past 100 years. Read about them all at Gloria Estefan was born in Havana on Sept. 1, 1957. Months later, her parents knew they had to leave.

Estefan's father had a been a motorcycle escort for Cuba's first lady Marta Fernández de Batista before her husband, dictator Fulgencio Batista, was ousted. Batista gave up power in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 1959. The plan was to go back. Of course, she didn't. But she would build an empire on the music and dance of Cuba, selling more than 100 million records. Her career includes six Grammy and Latin Grammy wins, MusiCares Person of the Year, 38 Billboard No. 1 hits, a Kennedy Center Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.Show captionGloria Estefan has stayed true to her Cuban roots. When I came home from school, I would take care of my dad because we could only afford to get a nurse during the time that I was in school and my mom was at work. She went to night school, revalidated her teaching credentials so that she could get a better job, because she was a clerk at a school. I would take care of my dad and my sister until she came home late at night. Music was my escape.
