Estefan's father had a been a motorcycle escort for Cuba's first lady Marta Fernández de Batista before her husband, dictator Fulgencio Batista, was ousted. Batista gave up power in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 1959. The plan was to go back. Of course, she didn't. But she would build an empire on the music and dance of Cuba, selling more than 100 million records. When I came home from school, I would take care of my dad because we could only afford to get a nurse during the time that I was in school and my mom was at work. She went to night school, revalidated her teaching credentials so that she could get a better job, because she was a clerk at a school. I would take care of my dad and my sister until she came home late at night. Music was my escape.
