It has become commonplace in pseudo-left circles to justify Hamas bloodlust as merely the understandable response of a subjugated people to oppression and 'apartheid'
A gleeful mob of young men spitting on the half-naked body of a dead woman in the back of a truck, paraded down a Gaza side street. Heaps of bloodied Jewish corpses in bomb shelters. People pulled from their cars and riddled with bullets. The streets of Israeli towns littered with dead innocents.
Hamas was founded as the Palestinian wing of the Nazi-allied Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. Its leader Ismail Haniyeh, is the organizational heir and successor of Haj Amin al-Husseini, Adolf Hitler’s chief Arab ally during the Second World War. The Qassam Brigades’ rampage though Israel’s southern towns this weekend resembles nothing so much as the handiwork of Hitler’s Einsatzgruppen murder squads during the Holocaust.
The centre is a lively New York venue with conference rooms, a film theatre, a library, a “people’s cafe” and a media laboratory. De los Santos, the People’s Forum founding director, was in a celebratory state of mind. “The people have broken out! The heroic resistance of the Palestinian people is an example to all revolutionary movements.”
The Samidoun Palestinian Prisoners’ Network, based in Vancouver, is effectively the PFLP’s overseas organizing and recruitment arm. Listed as a terrorist group in its own right by Israel on Feb. 28, 2021, Samidoun was formally registered three days later by the federal Corporations Canada agency under the Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act.
Israeli energy minister Israel Katz ordered electricity supply to Gaza shut off, and Netanyahu’s office has approved the cutting of supply lines for fuel and goods. And right on cue, the anti-Israel lobby group Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East called the move a “sadistic act of collective punishment” and “an obvious war crime.”
There are profoundly disturbing questions that we’ll all be wanting answered in the coming days, not least: How did Israel’s vaunted intelligence-gathering infrastructure fail to detect this bloody surprise attack in its planning stages?
