Officials said the fall was expected as it is cheaper for drivers to charge their vehicles at home. It is believed the network will need to expand to deal with the 'mass adoption' of electric vehicles.

The roll-out of fees for electric vehicle charging in Glasgow has seen a “significant” drop-off in use.

It added increasing prices was “likely to be unpopular since most of the current users will be those that live in the city without the means to charge at home”. Work is underway within the Glasgow City Region — which includes neighbouring councils — to develop a partnership with the private sector to expand the network.

“We are also seeing more examples of EV charging being provided by the private sector, which was an objective of removing the free service and introducing a tariff.” The cost of charging at home can be around 7p per kWh rather than 40p or 70p, officials said. Other councils had reported usage rates could drop by “approximately 50% as drivers opted to charge their vehicles at home instead” when tariffs are rolled out.

“It is surmised that this is due to Glasgow having higher volumes of traffic commuting into the city for retail, work, and leisure.”
