Kelly made a pair of stops in the NFL, with the Denver Broncos and then Indianapolis Colts, and is now the second-stringer for the Toronto Argonauts. As the short-yardage specialist for the Boatmen, he could be spotted in some key moments in Sunday’s championship slugfest against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Regina’s Mosaic Stadium.
Thing is, with Oliver Kylington away from the team on personal leave, Flames coach Darryl Sutter is still holding auditions for the job of sixth or seventh defenceman. “You’re filling big holes. I mean, MacKenzie has done a really good job for us, but one doesn’t replace two. Look at the even-strength minutes of Kylington and Erik . Just look at that, and then the penalty-killing that Erik did. Those are significant minutes. You don’t just all of a sudden say, ‘Well, that guy can take his place.’ It’s hard to do.”
For Gilbert, the key to earning more of Sutter’s trust — and, as a result, more ice time — will be ensuring he’s polished with the puck, fierce around the front of his own net and isn’t getting caught out of position when he looks to level an opponent.
