Gilas Pilipinas has commenced its preparations for the FIBA Asia Cup in August with a training camp in Doha , Qatar . The team will engage in a series of friendly matches against Qatar , Lebanon, and Egypt, beginning on February 13. This training camp serves a dual purpose: to fine-tune the squad before concluding the Asia Cup Qualifiers and to adapt to the absence of Kai Sotto, who is no longer part of the team.
Head coach Tim Cone emphasizes that the Doha trip is crucial for integrating returning players AJ Edu and Jamie Malonzo, who have recovered from injuries, and for evaluating different strategies in Sotto's absence.\The Philippines' early qualification for the Asia Cup allowed for this preparatory camp. They will conclude their qualification campaign with away games against Chinese Taipei and New Zealand on February 20 and 23, respectively. This training camp will provide valuable experience for the players, particularly those who will be taking on larger roles without Sotto. It will also allow the team to build cohesion and chemistry ahead of the August tournament. The team manager, Alfrancis Chua, believes the Doha training camp will enhance the players' teamwork and expose them to a challenging environment. \The Philippines' match schedule in Doha includes facing Qatar at 1:30 am on February 15, Lebanon at 11 pm on February 15, and Egypt at 1:30 am on February 17 (all times in Manila). Following these friendly matches, the team will shift its focus to the final qualification games against Chinese Taipei and New Zealand. While already qualified for the Asia Cup, the Nationals aim to maintain their unbeaten record and build momentum for their redemption campaign. They finished ninth in the previous edition and are looking to improve their performance in August.
