Giving gifts or rewards to policemen after a job well done would actually inspire them to perform better, Malacañang said Sunday despite criticisms such behavior might lead to corruption or abuse in the police ranks.
Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo has defended President Duterte’s pronouncement that cops can accept gifts from people grateful for assistance following concerns raised by some lawmakers.
The President earlier found nothing wrong if policemen accept gifts from generous people out of gratitude especially after solving a crime. Duterte, a former mayor and prosecutor, claimed accepting such gift does not constitute bribery. “If you are able to solve a crime and the family would like to be generous to you or would nurture a feeling of gratitude for what you accomplish, then by all means, accept it,” he added.
Senator Panfilo Lacson told the President that insatiable greed start with simple graft. “It could be more addicting than drugs. There is no detox, nor is there rehab facility available for addiction to money,” he tweeted.
