Changes to dispensing rules at pharmacies will allow about 6 million people to buy two months’ worth of medicine for the price of a single prescription.

said the change – set to be included in next month’s federal budget and due to come into force from September 1 – will see general patients able save up to $180 a year for a 60-day prescription.

Pharmacists would be able to charge dispensing fees less often if consumers have access to a larger allocation of essential medicines.More than 320 common medicines are covered by the change, including medication for high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, depression and anxiety, osteoporosis, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease.

“This cheaper medicines policy is safe, good for Australians’ hip pockets and most importantly good for their health. The panel recommended patients should be able to increase their script refill from one month to two months. Up to 12 months’ supply would be available in total before a new prescription is required.
