A biannual census estimates that the population of the George River caribou herd is still vulnerably low. FileNAIN, N.L. — The George River caribou herd population remains vulnerably low despite a slight jump in numbers two years ago, a recent biannual census of the population has found.

Officials said the population has declined 11 per cent since 2020 and by more than 98 per cent since 2001. The 2020 census showed that the George River caribou population increased for the first time in more than 25 years, from an anticipated 5,500 caribou in 2018 to 8,100 caribou in 2020. This is a significant increase from the years before the adoption of the George River caribou shooting restriction in 2013, when both adult female survival and fall calf recruitment was low.
