A Gary man was sentenced to four years probation Tuesday for shooting a man in the leg.
Michael McCauley, 29, pleaded guilty Sept. 5 to battery by means of a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony. His sentence was laid out under the plea deal’s terms, plus $5,200 paid to the victim. Deputy Prosecutor Christopher Bruno said it was McCauley’s first felony case. He asked the judge to accept the plea. Defense lawyer John Cantrell said the shooting happened on a “pretty intense day.” The victim was an “interesting character.” The sentence was a “very good compromise,” he said.
East Chicago Police responded at 8:40 p.m. May 28, 2021 to the 3500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue for an assault with a firearm call. Two men flagged down officers. The victim, who was in a Kia, was shot in the upper left leg. Police found 17 .223 shell casings about 50 yards south. The victim said he was walking to his car from an apartment building when a Chevrolet Impala pulled up near him. A man got out, pointed a pistol, then got out an assault-type rifle and opened fire.
