The Ottawa Senators have been a big hit on the ice and at the box office.

The atmosphere at the rink has been terrific and after struggling out of the gate the Senators have righted the ship to put themselves back into the discussion for a playoff spot. The club went into Thursday night’s action seven points behind the New York Islanders for the final wildcard spot.Article content

The additions of wingers Alex DeBrincat and veteran Claude Giroux along with goalie Cam Talbot and rookie defenceman Jake Sanderson have made a significant impact. Captain Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle, Drake Batherson, Thomas Chabot and Artem Zub are part of the core.Article content From 2005-to-2016, the Senators were pretty much at capacity at the rink, but those numbers started to slip during the 2016-17 campaign when the organization averaged 16,744 per-game and late owner Eugene Melnyk made his initial bid to move downtown to LeBreton Flats.

The Senators have already four sellouts this season. The home opener Oct. 18 against Boston, a Nov. 19 game against the New Jersey Devils, a Dec. 14 visit by the Montreal Canadiens and a post-Christmas return by the Bruins on Dec. 27 have all been complete sellouts. Naturally, visits by the Toronto Maple Leafs March 18 and April 1 are close to being sold out so that bodes well for the second-half of the season.
