Heading into his fourth season behind the bench, coach D.J. Smith looks down at the depth chart and knows this is the best group of players he’s ever had the chance work with since being hired by Dorion in May 2019.Just because rookie centre Mark Kastelic will suit up on opening night because he deserves it, that doesn’t mean it will stay that way. Veterans Dylan Gambrell and Derick Brassard will be waiting in the wings.
“We want to be competitive and in the first 20 games we know where we have to be,” Smith said. “If you want to be competitive, you’ve got to be .500 or better, or just under. Coach D.J. The club only did that once during pre-season games, but Smith liked what he saw in a small sample size.
“It looks like we’ll start that way, but it’s up to the centres to play responsible and then that makes it easy for the wingers.” The nice aspect of this is Smith and assistants Jack Capuano, Davis Payne and Bob Jones have options on how they want to use their forwards.
