"There's no question the city's budget is tight, and there are lots of other priorities, so I'm not a fan of putting city money into an arena, but it depends on so many factors."

Postmedia reported Tuesday that Bettman and Daly will be in town to attend the Senators game Monday night against the Florida Panthers at the Canadian Tire Centre. As part of the visit, they’ll also sit down with Sutcliffe and officials from the National Capital Commission.

“There are a few hurdles to cross before we’re entering into those kinds of discussions about an arena and the city’s role in that arena. I think there’s a role the city can play in supporting an NHL arena. We’re ready to co-operate and collaborate.”Article content It’s believed six groups have moved onto the second phase of the bidding. Once they’ve had a chance to get a first-hand look at the operation and meet with the club’s senior management, GSP will begin the final auction process for the team.

The Senators were given preferred bidder status to build a new rink at LeBreton Flats last June. Since then, the organization has been working with NCC officials to get a lease agreement in place, and it will be up to the new owners to finalize the deal when they take over the team.
