The Ottawa Senators are a hot commodity and the sale of the franchise is inching closer to the finish line.

“There are 15 or more people, or groups of people, who have filed applications and the data room was open,” Bettman said before the all-star game at FLA Live Arena. “And my guess is at some point in the next few weeks or so there will be a preliminary cut based on preliminary bids.”the list will be “culled down to a smaller number” but didn’t say what that might be.
The late Eugene Melnyk purchased the Senators out of bankruptcy in 2003. He was the only party interested that wanted to keep the team in Ottawa. He added later: “This is about a purchase of the Senators to keep them in Ottawa. They’re not going anywhere.” Bettman noted the preferred bidder status for a new rink at LeBreton Flats makes a purchase even more attractive. Tobi Nussbaum, the CEO of the NCC, said last month that talks with the club’s management on a lease continue and he expects it to get completed with the new owner.
