“He plays a lot of minutes and he plays against really good players,” coach D.J. Smith said of Zub on Monday. “Our record hasn’t been great without him. Other guys are going to have to step up and be better. This stretch will give the Senators another taste of what life is like without Zub and this just another in a long line of injuries for the club. First, it was goaltender Cam Talbot in camp, then centre Josh Norris with a shoulder injury early while Chabot missed five games with a concussion.
Smith couldn’t agree more. Defence is an area where the Senators have struggled, but with wins in four of their past five games, we’ve seen this club improve its play in front of Talbot and Anton Forsberg while also getting timely goals. “We know what that is and it’s check. We’re only going to check our way out of this. We’ve got the ability to score on some lines, and our power play has been good of late, but you’ve got to give up nothing. The less chances you give up, the more you win.”
