And then we were confronted with the horror of the discovery of remains of children in unmarked graves and burial grounds near these schools. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission identified 3,200 deaths of children who died while in custody of these schools. An inquiry in the 1980s investigated whether Canada was a haven for war criminals. Its report was inconclusive but it was redacted and the names of 240 Nazis who might have come to Canada are not shown.
It says 2.8 million Canadians are poor. In Nova Scotia, the overall poverty rate is 8.6 per cent, with 22 per cent of the population living with food insecurity. One in 10 seniors live in poverty in this province.
