“They were really good people – doing the job of police.” Officers wept and a stirring round of applause at a packed Gabba extended so long the master of ceremonies had to pause.
Officers wept and a stirring round of applause at a packed Gabba extended so long the master of ceremonies had to pause.
They were applauded around the boundary, and again after a moving introduction to the field of play by MC James Sherry. The Gabba audience did not want to stop, its collective gratitude rising over the continuations of Sherry, who stepped back to wait just a little longer. Constables Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold, along with Good Samaritan neighbour Alan Dare, were shot dead on Monday afternoon by three killers on a rural Queensland block. Constables Keely Brough and Randall Kirk managed to escape in extraordinary circumstances.
“When you talk about community policing, they totally embodied that,” local state MP Ann Leahy said of Arnold and McCrow from the town’s main street this week. “They were really good people – doing the job of police.”
