Ryanne Butler, shown in this photo from 2016, holds one of the awards she received at the Kiwanis Music, Speech and Drama Festival in Sydney. CONTRIBUTEDSYDNEY, N.S. — SYDNEY — Ryanne Butler has spent months getting ready for the return of the Kiwanis Music, Speech and Drama Festival in Sydney.

For the past three years, the Kiwanis Music, Speech and Drama Festival has been on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Butler said she missed participating. The music category is not just for piano. There are classes for voice, strings, woodwind and brass categories as well. For the speech class, students must research, write and perform their work — which is given to the audience members to follow along. Solo drama pieces include poetry and monologue performances. There are also duos and group prepared presentations as well as sight reading, where students are given a script before their performance.

"It gives a lot of kids a chance to go out and perform something and learn new things if this festival didn't exist."Youth participants are generally from Grades 1-12 and they perform their pieces in front of adjudicators who give marks and constructive critiques to the students who perform in the music or speech and drama categories.

"They also get advice from adjudicators to help them improve and upskill their skills. We've seen so many of these children from when they are very young until they reach an age where they don't really become involved anymore in the festival. Just to see their development and what it does for their confidence is just amazing."The festival is free for the public to attend and runs from Monday to May 6 from 9:30 a.m. until after 4 p.m. in downtown Sydney.

Organizers have also started reaching out to schools, who used to be a big part of the program in earlier years, in hopes they'll start entering students.
