And so, the small town in Queensland's north-west began pulling copper from the ground to provide a steady supply for the country's weapons and equipment.In the six decades that followed, it grew to become Australia's second-largest copper producer.But Glencore – which took control of the mine in 2013 – now says the remaining ore beyond that great chasm is "not economically viable".
Glencore insists this operation will keep running, as will the zinc-lead concentrator, and lead smelter.
