NRL: The Cronulla Sharks have defeated the St George Dragons to remain at the top of the ladder at PointsBet Stadium.
There’s only one man who can save the Rabbitohs according to rugby league legend Cooper Cronk following another thrashing at the hands of the Panthers.
“If you saw performance, they were poor, they were embarrassing at different stages — particularly effort-wise defensively,” Cronk said. “There is enough there that works that you say ‘if you can put this team together’ and Wayne’s greatest strength is unity. James Graham questioned Cronk further about not sitting in their hands for the rest of the current season.“Right now,” Cronk said.
“I think there’s been a lack of accountability with certain people and I’m talking higher management, not the players.” There was speculation that coach Ricky Stuart would go to market to find a ready-made replacement that could be parachuted into the No.7 jersey, but instead he put his faith in Kaeo Weekes — and it’s paid off.
After scoring two tries and setting up five while playing five-eighth in NSW Cup, Stuart had seen enough to know he was capable of stepping up to replace Fogarty. Weekes, who finished with 85 running metres, scored the Raiders’ first try and set up one in the second half with a perfectly-weighted chip kick, while Strange’s grubber set up the matchwinning try.
“I’m very fortunate that I’m at a club where my bosses and my leaders give me the support and stability to be able to show faith in these kids.”The Dolphins are firmly entrenched in the top eight after nine rounds, sitting fourth on the NRL ladder. The Panthers junior doesn’t necessarily always jump off the screen with flashy plays or an abundance of try assists, but he does all the little things right and has such a command of the Dolphins attack.
“He signed a long deal, and I can see why they’ve invested in him. He’s almost one of my favourite players to watch. If he stays on this trajectory, he may just be the reason why the Dolphins win their first premiership at some stage.Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga also lauded Katoa, believing the young halfback has a “footy IQ” beyond his years.
“Wayne did that with Cody Walker . He took Cody Walker to be one of the best ball players in the competition.”Sharks gun Nicho Hynes is the likely frontrunner to win the spot, while Mitchell Moses is also a chance despite his injury sidelined him until around Round 12. Interestingly, while Burton could be picked as a five-eighth under Maguire who has made it clear he will be picking in form players, he could also find a spot elsewhere. The centre spot is set to be a hotly contested position this year, with players like Tom Trbojevic, Latrell Mitchell, Stephen Crichton, Kotoni Staggs and Bradman Best all in contention among others.
He has also since been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and received treatment once arriving back in Australia before returning to rugby league. He hasn’t featured for NSW since 2022, but also has experience on his side, having already played 11 Origin games. Meanwhile, Sea Eagles star Haumole Olakau’atu has been excellent while Hudson Young is another contender.
The Broncos currently sit in seventh place on the NRL ladder after nine rounds, and rugby league legend Cooper Cronk still believes they have the talent to make the top eight. “They will need their halfback to lift that trophy. They drop to seventh tonight... the thing for the Broncos, Jock Madden has done a decent job coming in.
He also pointed out the Broncos have to contend with the Origin period, in which they will lose three of their biggest stars in Reece Walsh, Payne Haas and Pat Carrigan.
