The Albanese government has defended a key federal budget measure that has been labelled a 'biosecurity tax on Australian farmers'.

"It is shared by taxpayers who are putting in the bulk of funding. It is shared by importers who in fact are putting in 48 per cent of the funding of the $1 billion," Ms King said.

"We have had to fix that and clean up your mess. You failed to implement a biosecurity imports levy that you claimed would raise $325 million but it raised $0." "It is unfathomable the Labor government would ask farmers to pay for the biosecurity costs of importers from other countries," he said.
