An Air Busan plane caught fire at Gimhae International Airport in Busan, South Korea, while preparing for departure to Hong Kong. All passengers and crew were safely evacuated. The investigation into the cause of the fire is being hampered by the presence of large amounts of fuel and oxygen still on board the aircraft.

An investigation into a fire that engulfed an Air Busan plane at a South Korea n airport this week is facing challenges due to the significant amount of fuel and oxygen still present onboard, according to an air crash investigation official speaking to Reuters. Authorities conducted a risk management assessment on Friday ahead of a comprehensive investigation into the burned-out Airbus A321ceo plane, which remains on the tarmac at Gimhae International Airport in the southern city of Busan.

The fire, originating around 10:15 p.m. on Tuesday while the aircraft was preparing for its departure to Hong Kong, was initially detected by a flight attendant in an overhead luggage compartment located in the rear left side of the plane, an Air Busan spokesman informed Reuters on Friday. All 169 passengers and seven crew members were safely evacuated using emergency slides following the fire's outbreak, with only a few minor injuries reported, Air Busan stated. This incident occurred a month after the deadliest air disaster on South Korean soil, when a Jeju Air plane crashed on Muan Airport's runway during an emergency belly landing. Tragically, this crash resulted in the loss of all but two of the 181 people on board. The single-aisle, 17-year-old Air Busan plane has sustained burnt holes along the length of its fuselage roof. Remarkably, its wings and engines remain intact, as confirmed by a transport ministry statement. The aircraft still contains approximately 16,280 kg of jet fuel and other hazardous materials, including oxygen tanks, according to a statement issued by the transport ministry on Thursday. Authorities are currently grappling with the decision of whether the fuel needs to be removed before a full investigation can commence, the ministry stated. South Korea's Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board is spearheading the investigation, with representatives from France's BEA air accident investigation agency joining the efforts on Thursday. France holds the designation as the state of design for Airbus aircraft
