While playing together in the GTHL, Shane Wright, Brennan Othmann and Brandt Clarke dealt with the brutal murder of their Don Mills Flyers teammate.
“You get a pit in your stomach when you think about it,” says Othmann, who grew up on the border of Scarborough and Pickering and is a New York Rangers prospect. “It’s super sad and super tragic. You don’t want to see anything like that happen to anybody.
The murders happened in the middle of March of 2018 just as the AAA Bantam Don Mills Flyers were taking on the Toronto Marlies in the GTHL playoffs with a chance to defend their title as provincial champions. Pejcinovski was the top goalie on a powerhouse team. “We were able to use hockey as a distraction, come to the rink, take our mind off everything,” says Slawson.
In the 2019 OHL draft, Wright went first overall, Othmann went second, Clarke went fourth and Pejcinovski — in a memorial move by the league — went 74th, his sweater number.The players have also stayed in touch with“His dad was also a big part of the team,” says Wright. “He was always around the team. It’s important that we stay in contact with him and that we have a relationship with him. He’s one of our biggest fans and biggest supporters. His support and energy means so much to us.
