A new analysis has revealed the people, and areas, behind a landmark shift in the composition of Queensland households.
, along with shrinking rental availability and a dearth of new social housing builds, for the current squeeze.Charles-Edwards said the analysis showed the housing crisis was not just affecting people on the margins, but causing generational change.“There is a growing number of younger and older Queenslanders who are having to change their living arrangements because of the housing crisis,” she said.
According to the census data, between 2016 and 2021 the population of Queensland increased by 9.6 per cent, while the number of households grew by 13.0 per cent. In regional areas that have seen high growth between 2016 and 2021, such as the Sunshine Coast and Cairns, young people were much less likely to head their own households.
