Concerned about the amount of carbon the 59-year-old former executive for Coca-Cola and Cirque du Soleil was responsible for emitting throughout his lifetime, Craig Cohon struck out from Trafalgar Square bound for Istanbul.

As he trekked the 4,200 kilometres across Europe, at a pace of 25 — 35 kilometres daily, Cohon spoke to dozens of community leaders, CEOs, journalists and other people who were simply happy to chat with him in their homes.

With just two days to go before reaching the end of his Pan-European trek, on his 60th birthday and World Environment Day, Cohon calls the impending arrival in Istanbul Monday the “end of the beginning.” He is now fixing to help others continue the campaign. His approach hasn’t simply been to walk to draw attention to his cause. He’s also put down cash, dedicating $1 million to 10 technologies working to capture carbon, with the aim being to capture his own historic carbon emissions throughout his life. The figure registers at 8,147 tonnes.
