Logan MacLean • The GuardianCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Sam MacPhail got the idea for a book about Ron MacKinley from the man himself."I have so many stories and so many experiences. I could write a book. It would be a mile long," he told a reporter at the time.
MacPhail’s recently published book, Ron MacKinley: No One's Fool: Stories of a P.E.I. Politician, is a bit shorter than the mile MacKinley once joked about, coming in at a little under 200 pages, but it features stories from about 30 voices and a foreword from MacKinley. “When you add up 20 or 30 of those one-hours on Saturdays, it came out to be what it was. And looking back, it was something I can be proud of because it was that slow, compounding work that eventually turned into something of substance.”
The book features also dozens of pictures and newspaper clippings, many taken from scrapbooks and personal archives at the MacKinley farm in Cornwall.MacKinley was happy to open up those archives and loan out pictures to MacPhail to use in the book, MacKinley said on Dec. 21. “They got people of different political stripes commenting in it. It’s not like a one-shot deal, where you’ve just got a bunch of Liberals commenting in it.”
