France’s richest man hit backs at critics of his $2.2M donation to help rebuild Notre Dame

PARIS — France’s richest man Bernard Arnault hit out on Thursday at critics of his rush to donate tens of millions of euros to the restoration of Notre-Dame cathedral, branding the sniping as petty.

View this post on Instagram Today more than ever I feel proud to be part of the Pinault family. Not only for their personal and heart felt participation in the reconstruction of Notre-Dame de Paris but also because their contribution wont be claiming any tax deductions from the government. My husband and father in law are two generous french citizens, who sincerely understand the importance of this spiritual, cultural and historical treasure from Paris to the world.

“Can you imagine, 100 million, 200 million in one click!” said Philippe Martinez, head of the militant CGT labor union. “It really shows the inequalities in this country.” The firestorm began when Jean-Jacques Aillagon, a former culture minister and now adviser to Pinault’s father, went on Twitter after François-Henri Pinault announced his gift Tuesday to suggest that corporate contributions to Notre Dame’s restoration be given a 90% tax deduction, rather than the 60% that corporations normally get for charitable contributions.

“My husband and father-in-law are two generous French citizens, who sincerely understand the importance of this spiritual, cultural and historical treasure from Paris to the world,” she wrote.
