France has formally requested the transfer of Serge Atlaoui, a French national sentenced to death in Indonesia, from the Indonesian government.
France has sent an official request to the Indonesian government for the transfer of a French death row inmate, Serge Atlaoui, who has been imprisoned for nearly 20 years. Indonesia has recently released several high-profile detainees, including a Filipina mother on death row and the last five members of the 'Bali Nine' drug ring. French diplomats have confirmed that talks are underway for Atlaoui's transfer.
Senior law and human rights minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra told AFP that Indonesia received a formal letter requesting Atlaoui's transfer and it would be studied and discussed in early January. Atlaoui, 61, was arrested in 2005 at a secret drug factory outside Jakarta. He maintains his innocence, claiming he was installing machinery in what he believed was an acrylics plant. Initially sentenced to life imprisonment, his sentence was increased to death in 2007 on appeal. Atlaoui was held on Nusakambangan island in Central Java, known as Indonesia's 'Alcatraz,' after the death sentence but was transferred to Tangerang in 2015. That year, he was scheduled for execution alongside eight other drug offenders but received a temporary reprieve after Paris exerted pressure. Indonesian authorities agreed to allow Atlaoui's outstanding appeal to proceed. Atlaoui's lawyers argued that then-president Joko Widodo did not properly consider his case when rejecting his clemency plea. The court upheld its previous decision, stating it lacked jurisdiction over the clemency plea challenge
