A man and a woman suffering from smoke inhalation were found outside the building by police but did not require treatment at hospital.
That person has not yet been identified, Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien said Monday.
A police officer spotted smoke billowing out of a former medical clinic at 340 Wallace St. early Sunday and called the fire department. It was not safe for investigators to go into the building at first because the atmosphere was too toxic, O’Brien said. They waited for smoke to dissipate before returning to ensure there was no one else inside.
The coroner’s service has been informed of the death. It is very early on in the investigation but it appears there was no foul play, he said. RCMP forensic investigators and the Nanaimo Fire Department are investigating the cause of the fire, O’Brien said. That location is slated for redevelopment for an apartment building, but it has been a magnet for people without a place to live.
“It’s been boarded up and fenced off for at least the last year,” O’Brien said. “But it has been quite notorious. There have been a number of incidents of small fires.”
