The town of Gulgong in rural NSW has seen its plans for a dinosaur museum go up in smoke after a fierce online backlash.

Michael Durrant claims to have “the largest private fossil replica collection in the world produced by one guy”.

Mid-Western Regional Council won a $3 million state tourism grant last year to build a museum for Durrant’s collection in the gold rush town of Gulgong, a town of 2680 people north of Mudgee, and home already to four museums. “I thought was a good idea. Everyone else thought it was a good idea, except for a handful of people.”Durrant’s withdrawal means the council will lose the $3 million grant the former Coalition state government approved last November to build the museum. The grant came out of the Regional Tourism Activation Fund, which is aimed at “accelerating the development of new and enhanced tourism infrastructure across regional NSW”.

“It’s really nasty, and sad for the community … they don’t come knocking on the door with cheques for small communities very often.” O’Brien said the debate, much of which was conducted on Facebook, had been nasty across the board. The“There are still people being nasty to this day, saying everyone who opposed it were Karens and that they’d been looking forward to the dinosaurs, suggesting we’re keyboard warriors.”

“The attacks kept coming,” he said. “They were saying ‘oh yeah, it’s just going to be replicas’ … They don’t seem to understand that museums all over the world use replicas.”
