The social media giant wants to delay a legal battle with the ACCC while it deals with criminal charges instigated by iron ore billionaire Andrew Forrest over crypto scams.

Facebook has acknowledged the jurisdiction of Australian courts in a case where iron ore billionaire and philanthropist Andrew Forrest hasThe acknowledgement came as lawyers acting for Facebook’s patent company, Meta Platforms, appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

In Australia, the three Commonwealth charges instigated by Dr Forrest allege Facebook was criminally reckless by not taking sufficient steps to stop criminals from using its social media platform to send scam advertisements.It is alleged the scam advertisements, which have used the Forrest image and name to promote cryptocurrency investment schemes, have appeared on Facebook since March 2019.

The criminal charges were brought under Part 10 of the Commonwealth Criminal Code with the consent of the Commonwealth attorney-general.Dr Forrest has said he asked Facebook many times to prevent his image from being used by criminals to scam Australians, including in an open letter to Mr Zuckerberg in November 2019.
