NAC President and CEO Christopher Deacon said Herrndorf’s vision had an enormous impact on Canada’s performing arts. “He fundamentally believed the NAC belongs to all Canadians, and that it must reach out beyond its home on Elgin Street to Canadian artists, arts organization and communities in every part of the country.”

“Peter Herrndorf was brilliant in all he touched. He created. He inspired. He led,” former CBC anchor Peter Mansbridge said. Born in Amsterdam and raised in Winnipeg, Herrndorf graduated with a degree in political science and English from the University of Manitoba in 1962. He earned a law degree from Dalhousie University in 1965, and later obtained a master’s in administration from Harvard Business School.Article content

In a July 2013 interview, Herrndorf said the NAC at that time “had lost its sense of direction;” he believed it was his job to rebuild its confidence and set it on a new, clear path.Article content
